For most businesses, electricity is used during the day, exactly when solar produces. That makes commercial solar one of the most straightforward investments a Cape Town business can make: lower monthly costs, protection against future tariff increases and, with batteries, protection against outages that stop trading.
Sundial Solar designs and installs systems for offices, retail, workshops, guest houses, body corporates, farms and wine estates across the Western Cape. Our commercial page and commercial solar FAQs have more background.

How we design a commercial system
- Load profile first. We look at your bills and, where available, your interval meter data to see when you use power and what your demand peaks are.
- Tariff analysis. Commercial City of Cape Town and Eskom tariffs can include demand charges and time-of-use rates. A system sized to cut expensive peak and daytime energy often pays back faster than one sized to maximise panels.
- Roof and structure. IBR and Klip-Lok sheeting, flat concrete and carports all need different solutions; larger arrays may need a structural check.
- Backup or not. Grid-tied systems give the best return; adding batteries makes sense where downtime is costly.
Who it suits
- Guest houses and B&Bs: keep guests comfortable through outages (see our guest house install).
- Farms and wine estates: pumping, cold rooms and cellars; our agrivoltaics post shows what’s possible.
- Offices and retail: daytime aircon and lighting match solar output.
- Body corporates: common-area lighting, gates, pumps and lifts.
Wheeling and buying green power
If you don’t have the roof space, or want power for several sites, wheeling may let you buy renewable energy generated elsewhere and have it delivered over the grid. We cover this on our wheeled energy (VPPA) page and in our wheeling FAQs. Businesses can also explore carbon credits and I-RECs.
Tax and finance
Businesses may be able to claim tax allowances on renewable energy assets under the Income Tax Act. The rules have changed in recent years, so confirm the current position with your accountant before you rely on it. We can provide the equipment and cost breakdown they’ll need.
Compliance
Commercial systems need SSEG approval from the City of Cape Town or the relevant supplier, a CoC and, for larger systems, additional engineering sign-offs. We manage the process from application to commissioning.
What a commercial proposal from us includes
For business clients we provide a written proposal that sets out the recommended array and inverter size, expected monthly and annual generation, the share of your usage it covers, estimated savings against your current tariff, and a simple payback and cash-flow view. Equipment is listed by brand and model with warranty terms, and the proposal covers compliance steps, timelines and what we need from you, such as site access and bills. Where you want backup, we identify critical circuits and size storage to keep them running for an agreed period. We are happy to present the proposal to owners, trustees or a finance team and answer questions.
Pricing
Small business systems often start around our 30 kW kit (R251,600 – R273,300 incl. VAT installed). Larger systems are quoted per project after a load and roof assessment. Use the form below and choose “Business / commercial solar”, and we’ll ask for your bills. For homes, see residential quotes.

Frequently asked questions
How big a solar system does my business need?
It depends on your daytime usage and tariff. We size from your bills and load profile, not a rule of thumb.
Can we keep trading during outages?
Yes, with batteries and a backup circuit for critical loads such as tills, servers, refrigeration and lighting.
Do commercial systems need City approval?
Yes. Grid-tied systems need SSEG approval and a CoC. Larger systems need additional sign-offs, which we manage.
What is wheeling?
Wheeling lets you buy electricity from a renewable generator elsewhere and have it delivered over the grid. See our wheeling FAQs.
Do you install on farms outside Cape Town?
Yes, across the Western Cape, including farms on Eskom supply.
