Solar Installation in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs

Updated November 2026 · SAPVIA Certified · PV GreenCard installer · CoC on every install

The southern suburbs are among the most beautiful parts of Cape Town, and among the trickiest for solar. Tall oaks, mountain shadow on winter afternoons and heritage homes all affect how and where panels should go. Sundial Solar designs systems for Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont, Kenilworth, Wynberg, Plumstead, Bergvliet, Tokai, Constantia and Pinelands with those realities in mind.

Done well, solar still works very well here. It just needs a careful design rather than a standard package.

Designing around trees and mountain shadow

Homes close to the mountain in Newlands, Bishopscourt and upper Constantia can lose direct sun earlier in the afternoon, especially in winter, when the sun is low. Large street and garden trees cast moving shade through the day. Partial shade on one panel can drag down a whole string, so we:

  • Assess shading through the seasons during the site check, not just on the day we visit.
  • Split panels across roof faces or strings, or use optimisers where they help.
  • Give you a realistic generation estimate rather than a best case.

Heritage homes and protected areas

Parts of the southern suburbs fall within heritage protection overlay zones, and older homes may be graded. In these areas, visible roof-mounted panels can need approval. Where it matters, we prefer roof faces not visible from the street, and we can provide drawings for any application. We’ve worked on heritage properties before; read about a heritage home install in Cape Town.

Winter rain and cloudy days

The southern suburbs get noticeably more winter rain than the northern suburbs and the West Coast. Solar output drops on overcast days but doesn’t stop. That’s one reason battery sizing and grid charging settings matter here. We set up your inverter so the battery is ready for evening peaks, even after a grey day. More in how rooftop solar performs in bad weather.

Registration and compliance

The southern suburbs are on City of Cape Town supply, so grid-tied systems need SSEG registration, and registered systems may sell surplus power through the City’s Cash for Power programme. We include the CoC and paperwork in your quote.

Practical tips for southern suburbs homes

Older homes in Rondebosch, Claremont and Kenilworth often have Victorian or Edwardian corrugated-iron roofs, sometimes with ageing sheeting or timber. We check the roof condition before installing, because it’s far cheaper to replace a few sheets before panels go on than after. On Cape Dutch and thatched homes in Constantia, roof mounting may not be suitable at all. A ground-mounted array in the garden or on an outbuilding can be the better option. Inside, many older homes have little space for an inverter and battery, so we look at the garage, a utility room or a ventilated outdoor enclosure. Wherever we install, cable runs are neat and discreet, which matters on character homes.

Prices

Installed kits start at R93,500 (6 kW) and R132,400 (10 kW) incl. VAT. Shaded roofs sometimes need more panels or optimisers, which we’ll show as a separate line. See the cost guide and the calculator, or explore battery backup if shade limits your roof.

Frequently asked questions

My garden has big trees. Can I still get solar?

Often yes. We assess shade across the seasons and design the layout, strings or optimisers to suit. We'll tell you honestly if a roof is too shaded.

Do I need heritage approval for solar panels?

Some properties in heritage overlay zones or graded buildings need approval for visible panels. We'll advise and supply drawings.

Does solar work in winter in Newlands and Constantia?

Yes, with lower output on short, cloudy days. We give realistic winter estimates.

Which southern suburbs do you serve?

Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont, Kenilworth, Wynberg, Plumstead, Bergvliet, Tokai, Constantia, Pinelands and nearby.

Is a battery-only system better for a shaded home?

Sometimes. If roof space is very limited, battery backup alone, or with a small array, can be the better choice.
