Updated November 2026 · SAPVIA Certified · PV GreenCard installer · CoC on every install

The honest answer to “how much does solar cost in Cape Town?” is: it depends on how much power you use, how much backup you want and what your roof looks like. But you should not have to give your phone number just to see a ballpark. Below are our current installed kit prices, including VAT, and an explanation of what moves the price up or down.

These prices are for complete systems designed and installed by Sundial Solar, a SAPVIA Certified installer, with a CoC on completion.

What makes a solar system cost more or less

  • Battery capacity. Storage is often the biggest single line item. A system built mainly to cut your bill needs less battery than one built to ride through long outages.
  • Roof type and access. Tile, IBR and flat roofs need different mounting. Double-storey homes, steep pitches and long cable runs add labour.
  • DB board condition. Older boards sometimes need upgrading before a CoC can be issued.
  • Shading. Trees and neighbouring buildings may call for a different panel layout or optimisers.
  • Brand choice. We work with several inverter and battery brands (see our data sheets), and price differences between them can be meaningful.

Payback on solar in Cape Town

City of Cape Town residential tariffs have risen sharply in recent years (see our posts on City electricity price hikes). For our calculator we assume roughly R4.00 per kWh for City residential customers; your actual rate depends on your tariff and usage band. On that assumption, a household spending R2,500 a month that offsets about 70% of its usage saves in the region of R1,500 – R1,900 a month, which puts simple payback on a 6 kW kit in the order of 4 to 6 years. These are estimates, not promises. Try the savings calculator with your own bill.

Costs people forget

Ask any installer whether their price includes: the CoC, SSEG registration with the City of Cape Town, a bi-directional meter if the City requires one for your connection, monitoring setup on your phone, and removal of rubble. Our quotes list these so there are no surprises. If you plan to sell excess power under the City’s Cash for Power programme, registration is essential.

Paying for it

Most clients pay a deposit on acceptance and the balance on completion. If you would like to spread the cost, ask us when we quote and we’ll explain the options available at the time. For businesses, read our business solar page.
