Aiko ABC solar panels are changing what homeowners can expect from a roof that is not perfectly sunny. In short, they move every electrical contact to the back of the cell. As a result, they cope better with shade, run cooler and lose less power in South African heat.
At Sundial Solar, an EnergyBee installation partner in South Africa, we test new technology before we recommend it. Here is what makes these back contact solar panels different, and what a recent real-world test showed.
What Are Aiko ABC Solar Panels?
ABC stands for All Back Contact. On a conventional panel, thin silver lines (fingers) and thicker strips (busbars) run across the front of every cell. They collect current, but they also block sunlight.
Aiko removes all of that from the front. Instead, the cells are joined at the rear with zero-busbar (0BB) copper interconnects. Because nothing shades the face, the panel looks pure black and catches more light. You can read more on the official Aiko All Back Contact cell page.
How the Busbar Design Differs
- No front busbars or fingers: the full cell surface faces the sun.
- Rear 0BB copper interconnects: copper replaces silver, which improves durability and reduces cost.
- 0.3 mm cell overlap: cells sit tightly together, so there are almost no wasted gaps.
- About 93.5% cell area: more of the panel actually produces power.
Partial Shading Performance
Shade is the silent killer of solar yield. On a standard panel, one shaded cell can drag down a whole string of cells. Consequently, a chimney, a tree or a neighbour’s wall can cost you far more than you expect.
Aiko ABC solar panels handle this differently. In TUV Nord testing with one cell shaded, they produced around 30% more power than a conventional module. In addition, shaded cells develop cooler hot spots, which lowers long-term stress on the panel.
For South African homes with dormer roofs, tall trees or afternoon shadows from neighbouring buildings, this matters a great deal.
Built for South African Heat
Every solar panel loses output as it gets hotter. The temperature coefficient tells you how much. Aiko ABC solar panels are rated at -0.26% per degree Celsius, which is noticeably better than many mainstream panels.
On a 40 degree summer roof in South Africa, cells can easily reach 65 degrees or more. Therefore, a lower coefficient means more kilowatt-hours on exactly the days you run the aircon and pool pump.
Low Degradation Over 30 Years
Aiko ABC solar panels also age slowly:
- First-year degradation of 1% or less.
- After that, 0.35% or less per year.
- At least 88.8% of rated power left at year 30.

An Honest Note on Bifaciality
This is a dual-glass panel, so it can collect some reflected light from the rear. However, its bifaciality is about 70%, which is lower than many TOPCon panels at 80% or more. On a typical pitched residential roof the rear gain is small anyway. Still, for ground mounts over light gravel, it is worth factoring in.
Warranty
Aiko offers a 15-year product warranty and a 30-year power warranty. Terms can differ by region and distributor, so please confirm local terms with us before you buy.
Video: MSPD Africa MythBusters Lab Puts Aiko to the Test
MSPD Africa, the South African distributor of Fox ESS, recently ran a simple but clever test hosted by CEO and founder Mark Becker.
The Pump Flow-Rate Shading Test
First, the team wired a traditional panel and an Aiko panel to water pumps, so the flow rate showed output at a glance. When Mark covered part of the traditional panel with cardboard, its flow dropped straight away. Yet the same cardboard made barely any difference to the Aiko panel, which shows why Aiko ABC solar panels are getting so much attention. Even a diagonal strip of shade, which hits many cells at once, hardly slowed the Aiko pump.
The Outdoor Real-World Test
Next, they took it outside. Both panels were connected to a Fox ESS micro-inverter with two MPPTs, so each panel had its own tracker. The comparison was a 615 W conventional N-type panel against a 610 W Aiko panel, both facing east.
Despite the lower label rating, the Aiko panel delivered 610 W while the conventional panel delivered 570 W. That is roughly 7% more power in real conditions, right outside their warehouse.
Are Aiko ABC Solar Panels Right for Your South African Home?
Aiko ABC solar panels are a strong choice if your roof has partial shading, faces east or west, or gets very hot. Similarly, they suit anyone who wants a clean all-black look. On a wide-open, shade-free roof, the gap narrows, so the price difference deserves a proper comparison.
That is where we come in. We design every system around your roof, your usage and your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does ABC mean on Aiko solar panels?
ABC means All Back Contact. All electrical contacts sit on the rear of the cell, so there are no busbars or fingers blocking sunlight on the front.
Do Aiko ABC solar panels really perform better in shade?
Yes. TUV Nord testing showed about 30% more output with one cell shaded, and the MSPD Africa test showed barely any loss under cardboard shading.
Are back contact solar panels good for South African heat?
Yes. The -0.26% per degree C temperature coefficient means less power loss on hot South African roofs than many standard panels.
What warranty comes with Aiko panels?
Aiko offers a 15-year product warranty and a 30-year power warranty. Please confirm local terms with us, as they can vary.
Does Sundial Solar install Aiko panels in South Africa?
Yes. As an EnergyBee installation partner, we can design and install systems using Aiko panels for South African homes.
