Solar Installation in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs

Updated November 2026 · SAPVIA Certified · PV GreenCard installer · CoC on every install

From Bellville and Plattekloof to Brackenfell, Kuils River, Kraaifontein, Parow, Goodwood and Edgemead, the northern suburbs combine sunny inland weather with a wide mix of homes: 1960s and 70s face-brick houses, newer townhouse complexes and big family homes on the ridges. Sundial Solar installs solar and battery systems across the area.

There’s an existing Bellville and northern suburbs page on our site. This page covers prices and practical advice for getting a quote.

Older homes: check the DB board first

Many established homes in Bellville, Parow, Goodwood and Kuils River still have their original or partly upgraded distribution boards. Before a solar or battery system can be signed off with a CoC, the board has to meet the current wiring code. During our free site check we look at the board, earthing and cable routes, and if an upgrade is needed we quote it separately and clearly. Better to know upfront than to find out on installation day.

Townhouses and sectional title

Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Kuils River have many townhouse complexes. Here roof space can be limited and the body corporate usually has to approve installations. A 6 kW kit or a battery backup system is often the right fit. We’ll provide a layout and equipment list for the trustees.

Hot summers, strong output

The northern suburbs warm up more than the Atlantic coast on summer afternoons. That’s good for generation, and it also means air-conditioning loads in the afternoon line up nicely with solar output. Running your geyser on a timer during sunny hours, plus pool pumps and dishwashers in the middle of the day, gets the most out of the panels. Read our view on geyser timers.

Registration and the City of Cape Town

Most of the northern suburbs are on City of Cape Town supply, so grid-tied systems must be registered as SSEG. We include the paperwork and the CoC. Some outlying areas may be supplied by Eskom; your bill will tell you, and we’ll handle either.

Getting the most from a northern suburbs system

The biggest savings come from using solar power while it is being produced. For a typical northern suburbs household that means running the geyser on a timer around midday, scheduling the dishwasher and washing machine for late morning, and running the pool pump in the sunniest hours. If everyone is out during the day, a battery stores the surplus for the evening peak, when City tariffs bite hardest. We set up the inverter’s monitoring app during commissioning and show you how to read it, so you can see what your system is doing and spot problems early. Our guide to solar inverter apps explains the main features.

We also offer after-sales support and system checks. Solar is a long-term investment and we want it to keep performing. See after-sales for how we look after clients once the installers have left.

Frequently asked questions

Which northern suburbs do you cover?

Bellville, Plattekloof, Welgemoed, Durbanville, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Kraaifontein, Parow, Goodwood, Edgemead and surrounds.

My house is old. Can I still get solar?

Yes. We check the DB board and wiring first and quote any upgrade needed for a CoC.

Can I install solar in a townhouse complex?

Usually yes, with body corporate approval. We supply the layout and equipment details.

How long does installation take?

Most homes take one to two days, plus a few days for compliance paperwork.

Is battery backup worth it in the northern suburbs?

If outages affect your work or security, yes. Otherwise a solar-first system with a smaller battery may give better value.

Can I sell excess solar power back to the City?

If you are a City of Cape Town customer with a registered SSEG system and the right meter, you may be able to sell surplus power through the Cash for Power programme. We include the registration paperwork.
