Data sheets for solar systems!

Data sheets for solar systems are a crucial part of ensuring that you are installing the correct equipment which is suited to the clients needs. An example is if the client has roofs with multiple orientations then the solar panel arrays will need extra mppt’s in our to accommodate the various azimuths and roof slope.

What if the client has no garage and the inverters and batteries have to be installed in doors. Then the Sunsynk, Deye, Luxpower systems with low voltage lithium batteries cannot be legally installed. We would then choose the Fox inverters with their high voltage safe lithium batteries. We also need to know how many panels each inverter can handle and at what voltage the inverters mppts start up and more importantly at what voltage they burn out. We chose the right products for uniquely tailored for every individual solar system installation.

And what about solar panels? For one we need to make sure they are the mono-crystalline type as they are the most efficient at capturing sunlight. They must be tier one and have solid warranties. Let’s say there is partial shading from a chimney or tree. The best panel for that is the Aiko panel as it has shade resistant technology. If not we can save the client money using a standard module. For structural roof integrity we need to know the size and weight of each panel as well as where the clamp zones are. We have seen many examples of poorly installed panels that are now sagging on clients roofs or cracking from wind flex.

Solar systems are generally broken down into two different categories: Residential Solar Systems and Commercial Solar Systems in both cases incorrectly speccing components could lead to poor performance, system failure or burn out, reduced life span and even death in case of electrocution or fire. Commercial Solar systems are far more complicated jobs and often use different components with the more experienced installers often choosing Sigenergy or Fox systems. Residential installations have traditionally gone for the Sunsynk, Deye or Luxpower Inverters and batteries. As of late Fox Inverters and their ultra safe high voltage, low amp lithium batteries have taken a huge chunk out of the residential market share. It’s a good thing to know that Sundial Solar teams experienced enough to install commercial systems are able to guarantee a safe, compliant and fully functioning at it’s peak residential solar install.

There is also good news for South African clients in the residential market and especially in the commercial solar market. Load shedding has subsided. What this means is that less batteries are needed, it makes systems so much more affordable and commercial solar client can save from day one! By just installing solar panels and inverters without the expensive lithium batteries bills can be cut by up to 90%. The clients would drop to a lower use tariff and benefit from reduced Eskom or City Council electricity fees. Sundial Solar offers Power Purchase Agreements (PPA’s) for commercial solar buyers. This means that no capital outlay is needed we operate, maintain and even insure the system and you only pay for the solar power the system produces. Even though load shedding is in a lull it sometimes  makes sense to add batteries to avoid Time of Use Tariffs (TOU). Here we charge up the batteries during off peak times and discharge them during the peak hours saving clients tons of money. Again the data sheets for solar systems and of the batteries are taken into consideration when choosing the right battery for the right customer. More good news is that PPAs traditionally only available for commercial clients is soon to be available to for the residential solar market through Sundial Solar finance & Ooba Solar

Through our nation wide network of partners we are able to service all major areas and have also partnered with all the major finance houses in order to offer not only PPA agreements but asset backed finance. Many companies prefer to purchase their solar systems through banks rather than sign a PPA. The bonus is that often (but not always) the terms are shorter and after a few years the systems are paid off and the clients get free energy. For now it has been the only  option for residential solar customers. (Watch this space!) There is also one other easy revenue stream for commercial solar customers. Carbon Credits and International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs). Every solar app has a function that shows how much carbon emissions the system has saved. For every Ton of Carbon saved a Carbon credit is generated. We can sell these Carbon Credits and IRECs on your behalf. Free money basically! But what if the roof space is just not enough to cover a high energy user? Good news is that we have the perfect solution in the form of Wheeled Energy. These are electrons that have been put into the grid by Independent Power Producers which we have purchased and can sell onto high energy demand commercial users. This is a digital transaction done between ourselves and Eskom or the City Councils. The rate at which we sell this wheeled energy back to our customers is usually 40% to 60% less than Municiple or Eskom tariffs. The issue is that although there are wind power farms that can provide energy at night, there is just not enough to cater for the demand of peak tariffs or at night. Good news again is that the IPPs are popping up all over the country in the form of wind and battery energy storage farms (BESS) so that means that TOU charges and night time wheeled energy is soon becoming available. High rise buildings just don’t have enough roof space for solar panels and wheeled energy is their only hope of reducing their electricity bills.
