40% increase in power bills!

No one really realises just how much the City of Cape Town hiked their power bills up by during last Aprils increase. The power bills are all on different tiers so it can be quite confusing. Tier one was 1 to 400 kWh’s was R2.50 per unit. Then R3.50 per unit for 400 – 900 kWh’s and then R5 per unit for anything over that. The new tariffs jumped from R2.50 per unit to R3.91!!! What people don’t realise is that this is the amount most home owners use and it equates to a 40% jump in power! If you use more than 600 kWh’s then you pay R4.71 per unit. That’s just 29 cents shy of the previous years’ highest tariff.
We find that load shedding used to be the main driver for solar system sales. It’s now cost savings and with the huge spikes in energy charges it’s no longer a matter of if you get solar, it’s a case of when. I wonder what this years increase will be.
