Coastal conditions: salt, sand and the south-easter
Homes near the beach on the Blouberg strip face salt spray, wind-blown sand and a strong summer south-easter. In practice that means:
- Corrosion-resistant mounting and fixings. We use aluminium rails and stainless-steel fasteners, and avoid mixing metals that corrode against each other.
- Wind loading. We follow the mounting manufacturer’s spacing for exposed sites and pay attention to roof edges, where uplift is strongest.
- Cleaning. Salt and dust build up faster here than inland. A rinse a few times a year, especially at the end of summer, keeps output up.
- Inverter and battery placement. We keep electronics out of direct salt air where possible: a garage or a sheltered, ventilated enclosure.
Typical homes and systems in the area
Much of Table View, Parklands and Sunningdale is newer housing with tile or IBR roofs and fairly open skies, which suits solar well. Newer estates may have home-owner association (HOA) rules about panel placement. We can provide drawings for HOA approval. Many households here run pool pumps and some have EVs, so the 10 kW and 15 kW kits are popular, but we size to your bill, not to a package.
City of Cape Town rules
Blouberg and Table View are on City of Cape Town supply, so grid-tied systems must be registered as small-scale embedded generation (SSEG). Registered systems can also take part in the City’s Cash for Power programme, which pays for surplus electricity you export. We include the CoC and SSEG paperwork in every grid-tied quote.

Getting the most from solar on the West Coast
Blouberg and Table View often get morning mist and a breezy afternoon in summer, and wet, grey spells from the north-west in winter. Panels facing north, or split east and west, give a good spread of generation across the day. If you are at work during the day, a battery lets you use the solar power in the evening instead of exporting it cheaply. If someone is home, running the geyser, dishwasher, washing machine and pool pump between about 10:00 and 15:00 uses solar directly, which is where most of the savings come from. Will sea air damage my solar panels?
Quality panels handle coastal conditions well. The risk is mostly to mounting and fixings, which is why we use aluminium and stainless steel and keep electronics sheltered.
How often should panels be cleaned near the beach?
A gentle rinse every few months, more often after windy, dusty spells. Avoid harsh chemicals and high-pressure jets.
Does my estate need to approve solar panels?
Many estates have HOA guidelines. We provide a layout drawing you can submit for approval.
How quickly can you do a site visit in Table View?
Because we're based in Big Bay, we can usually visit within a few working days.
