Cape Town Electricity Price Increases
The city of Cape Town is due to increase its prices yet again. More pain is on the way for homes and businesses. The good news is that with financed solar packages you can end up saving a lot of money and wasted power bills. The post is going to focus on City of Cape Town pre-paid customers. These are the domestic house tariffs.

City of Cape Town Domestic Home Tariffs for Pre-Paid meters price increases
Service and wires charge
Service and wires charge will be R74.87 up from R68.59 which is an 8,54% increase.
0 to 600 kWh’s (Units)
The old tariff of 390.94 will increase to R4.13 Remember that in 2025 this was only R2,50 per unit so this is a massive jump in power prices and will hit consumers very hard.
600 kWh’s and up
Was R4.64 and will now be R4.93 so nearly R5 per kWh when the 2025 tariff was R3.50 per kWh.
What happens when I switch to solar?
When you switch to solar the Sundial Solar Team will apply to the City of Cape Town for SSEG registration. This stands for Small Scale Embedded Generation. The City of Cape Town has an approved list of inverters that are allowed to be connected to the grid legally. Then most likely a new meter will be installed and you will be switched to a Time of Use tariff. (TOU) Click on this link to see our blog post about when TOU charges are applied!
Domestic Time of Use Charge
Fixed Charges
Administration charge – R344.49 per month
Capacity Charge – R250.85 per month
Energy Charges
High Season (June,July,August)
Peak – R8.98
Std. – R3.69
Off Peak – R3.01
Low Season (September to May)
Peak – R4.18
Std. – R355.60
Off Peak – 3.01
This is where battery management becomes critical. You can avoid the high charges and only buy power from the grid during off peak times while depleting the battery during standard and peak times. If your system is sized correctly and has enough solar panels then buying from the grid would be a very rare event at all. City of Cape Town Electricity price increases are avoidable.
