A solar panel needs light, but excessive heat reduces its efficiency. The photons released by the sun hit the panels and knock electrons of the silicon atoms, these atoms then travel down wires in the solar panel which then make their way to the solar inverter as DC power. 1. Solar Panel Temperature Coefficient – The Hidden Number


Every solar panel has something called a temperature coefficient.
A typical solar panel loses around 0.3%–0.4% efficiency for every 1°C rise above 25°C cell temperature.

On a hot summer afternoon:

* Ambient temperature: 40°C
* Panel surface temperature: 60–70°C

Many installations keep panels very close to the roof. The problem? The concrete roof heats up.
