Virtual wheeling is a new product that offers a mechanism to claim energy purchased from a Generator by Entities transacting on behalf of multiple Eskom or Municipal connected customers.

Virtual wheeling is a financial mechanism that facilitates the sale and delivery of electricity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to end-users via an existing transmission or distribution network. This innovative solution allows businesses to access renewable energy without the need for a direct connection to the generator, resulting in cost savings, enhanced energy security, and a reduced carbon footprint.

Eskom’s Virtual Wheeling product empowers multiple generators and off-takers, including those on both Eskom and municipal grids, to conduct electricity transactions with greater efficiency. The process supports retrospective energy claims and streamlines power purchasing agreements across different networks, offering a flexible and scalable approach to energy procurement.

How does it work:

  • Virtual wheeling enables retrospective energy claims (based on power purchase agreement with a generator) across all networks, irrespective of distributor boundaries in line with the Virtual Wheeling Business rules. 
  • End users/off-takers who have contracted with an entity for wheeled energy (Virtual wheeling) will still be required to settle their utility accounts with Eskom/the Municipality.
  • Eskom will refund energy claims for this product at WEPS, Local and Non-Local rates link to tariff book, depending on where the end user sits.
  • Claimant will submit a monthly claim to Eskom for wheeled energy to receive. their refund

How the claim
process works?

Once the application is approved and contract signed our team manages the monthly transactions settlement calculations:

Step 2

  1. Eskom provides the status for all registered and qualifying Eskom supply points.
  2. Claimant submits energy refund claims for the contracted period based on registered supply points.
  3. Ad hoc meter audits may be requested for points beyond the Eskom meter during claims.
  4. After submission, your claim will be processed and verified according to the contract and business rules.
  5. The Energy Refund is calculated monthly by Eskom.
  6. Claims with discrepancies won’t be processed; submit a corrected claim or withdraw it.
  7. For disputes, Eskom will assist in resolving them, with adjustments made in the next cycle.

Your application form and all necessary documentation must be submitted as a single complete package:

Step 3

  1. Complete the application form
  2. Compile required documents
  3. Submit your application form to clientservices@eskom.co.za
  4. Receive a reference number as an acknowledgement of receipt within five (5) business working days.
  5. An Eskom representative will contact you when processing the application. A fee will be payable to process the application.
  6. Once the fee is been paid your additional documentation will be requested for verification, processing and contracting.
  7. Process and Contracting time frame is estimated between 2 -3 months, depending on the volume and complexity of your energy needs and documents submitted.
